A prescription for recovery: Canadian doctors urge Trudeau government to introduce universal public drug coverage
Sep 21, 2020
Toronto (September 21, 2020) - In anticipation of this Wednesday’s Throne Speech, Canadian doctors are again calling on the government to take immediate action to implement universal, public pharmacare. “We are the only high income country in the world with a universal health care system that does not include a universal drug plan. COVID-19 has only heightened the need to close that gap,” said Dr. Danyaal Raza, Chair of Canadian Doctors for Medicare and family physician in downtown Toronto. “Canada also has the third highest per capita drug spending in the world. It is clear that the status quo is...

Cambie ruling a victory for public health care in Canada
Sep 10, 2020
(Unceded Coast Salish Territories - Vancouver, BC) In today’s landmark ruling in the Cambie Surgery Centre case, Justice Steeves dealt a strong blow to the efforts of Dr. Brian Day and others to undermine Canada’s publicly-funded health care system. The decade-long legal attack launched by one of the largest for-profit surgical centres in Canada sought to invalidate key sections of the BC Medicare Protection Act (MPA). Closing defense statements to proceed in Cambie trial
Nov 22, 2019
Closing statements for the defense are scheduled to begin on Monday, 25 November 2019 before the Supreme Court of British Columbia in a landmark legal challenge that threatens the central organizing principle of Canada’s public health care system – that care should be provided first to those who need it most, not to those who can afford to pay for quicker access.
